The SH18 Hobsonville Deviation project, when complete in 2012, will deliver Waitakere's commuters a brand new link from the end of the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) at Massey North to North Shore City to increase capacity, reduce congestion on local roads and improve traffic flow. An extension of the Northwestern to Brigham Creek Road will add another three kilometres to the motorway. The Hobsonville Project was split into 2 stages of which Hurlstones is now working on the 2nd stage under the direction of the Main Contractor HEB Construction. This stage consists of a new four lane motorway approximately 6km long from the existing SH18 motorway at Monterey Park, Hobsonville to a new connection to the SH16 North Western motorway south of the intersection with Hobsonville Road. It also involves a 2.2km two lane extension of the SH16 North Western motorway through to a new northern termination at the intersection with Brighams Creek Road. The project has been split into 4 zones with different contractors working on different zones in order to meet the project end date of 2012. Hurlstones has been contracted to complete the earthworks to subgrade level in Zone 3, which topographically speaking is the most difficult zone. Hurlstones began the job in late September 2009 and is expected to complete a short earthworks contract of 6 months. On completion in March 2010 Hurlstones will have moved approximately 300,000m3 of material, including a cut of 21,000m3 (8-10m depth) of material underneath a pre-constructed bridge on original ground levels at trig road.
