Mt Roskill SH20 Motorway Extension
Projects - Completed Projects

The Mt Roskill SH20 Motorway Extension is a key part of the Western Ring Route. Once completed, the Western Ring Route will provide an alternative to State Highway 1 (SH1) between Manukau City and Albany via State Highway 20, State Highway 16 and State Highway 18.

The Mt Roskill Extension project has extended the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) 4 kilometres into Mt Roskill, from Queenstown Road in Hillsborough. There are interchanges at Hillsborough Road and Dominion Road, with on- and off-ramps in both directions (eastbound and westbound) and motorway overbridges for local traffic. The extension ends at a new roundabout which links to Sandringham Road Extension. Maioro Street has been widened to four lanes to accommodate motorists accessing the motorway extension. Two pedestrian/cyclist bridges have been constructed at Keith Hay Park and Ernie Pinches Street. A dedicated cycleway is being developed in conjunction with Auckland City Council and will run parallel to the motorway.

In October, 2005, we undertook an "Earthworks Alliance" contract with the Head Contractor, Fulton Hogan, for the S.H.20 Motorway Extension Project. The total contract was valued at $180,000,000, with the Earthworks Alliance content being over $39,000,000. As a key member of the construction team, our Site Management personnel were involved in all levels of planning, programming, cost reporting and quality control. The project was recently completed in May, 2009, 7 months ahead of schedule.

The construction site was in a major residential and commercial zoning area that also involved complex geotech and material handling requirements. Interruption to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic, as well as local businesses was managed through detailed programming and planning aimed at minimising disruptions. The Earthworks involved 350,000m3 of "cut-to-fill" and 200,000m3 of off-site cartage. This included designing and managing the safe cartage of 170,000m3 across an intersection that had 40,000 vehicle movements per day with the aid of traffic lights, adding a diagonal crossing to the existing cross road intersection.

We were also responsible for the construction and trimming of all embankments, as well as 150,000 m2 of Sub-grade trimming in preparation for Pavement and Surfacing works. We also undertook the construction of all drainage pipework greater than 600dia, including 1300metres of 3.2m dia storm-water culverts.
